Kendall Jenner sparks debate about privilege after employee holds her umbrella for her

Kendall Jenner has sparked a debate over her privilege after she was photographed being shielded from the rain with an umbrella held by a member of her staff.

On Saturday, the 27-year-old reality star stepped out in California with the man, who appears to be either her assistant or bodyguard. During the rainy outing, which saw Jenner dressed casually in black leggings, a blue hoodie sweatshirt, Uggs, and glasses, she was accompanied by the unidentified man, who was photographed holding an umbrella above the model’s head as she made her way to and from her car.

In one image shared by The Sun, Jenner could be seen holding her phone in one hand and what appeared to be car keys in the other as the man held the umbrella angled so that she would not get wet. In another image, the man, who was wearing a hat and a rain jacket with a hood, could again be seen shielding Jenner despite the model not holding anything in her own hands. The necessity of the help holding Jenner’s umbrella sparked debate on social media, where many questioned why the reality star couldn’t shield herself from the rain.

“She’s so out of touch it’s actually ridiculous,” one person commented under a TikTok video of the controversial choice, while another said: “That’s not right. It doesn’t matter who you are, hold your own f**king umbrella.”

Others suggested Jenner is guilty of “diva behaviour,” while some claimed that the photos solidify the reality star’s label as a “nepotism baby”.

However, while some were critical of Jenner, many others defended the supermodel on the basis that the man is an employee of hers and is being paid to help her.

“That man is getting paid. If he doesn’t give a damn, why do you give a damn? You know why he doesn’t give a damn? Because he’s getting paid. He probably makes more than you,” influencer James Anderson Jefferson Jr said in a TikTok video.

Another person urged critics to “relax,” while pointing out that the help is probably included in the man’s job description. “That is his job!! Relax,” they wrote.“What’s wrong with that? My husband does it all the time and he doesn’t get paid,” someone else joked, while others claimed that they would also accept the job shielding Jenner from the rain if it meant a decent salary. “I’d be happy to hold her umbrella for probably $100,000 a year,” one user said.

The photos also prompted another person to remind critics that celebrities are often assisted when it is raining by members of their staff. “You see it all the time with politicians and celebrities, but as soon as a Kardashian/Jenner does it everybody wants to criticise,” they wrote.

However, despite the acknowledgement that the man is being paid to help Jenner, some suggested that she could still hold her own umbrella so that her employee could then do the same.I mean it is his job but a decent, kind person would hold their own umbrella so the other person could do the same,” one person wrote.

Critics Choice Awards 2023 Winners: See the Full List Here

It wasn’t quite a sweep for Everything Everywhere All at Once— Cate Blanchett won the hotly contested best actress race over Michelle Yeoh— but the Critics Choice Awards proved to be an outstanding night for A24’s strong Oscar contender. Winning best director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, best original screenplay, best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan, and best editing, it was a clear favorite among the critics.

Brendan Fraser gave a moving speech for best actor for The Whale, one of many actors to mention onstage how years in the Hollywood wilderness preceded what’s now a celebrated comeback. Angela Bassett, who could become the first actor to be Oscar-nominated for a Marvel film, won the best supporting actress prize for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which also won a costume design award for Ruth E. Carter. And on the television side, some familiar winners from last year’s Emmys— Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Coolidge, Sheryl Lee Ralph— were joined by contenders from newer shows like The Bear and best TV movie winner Weird: The  Al Yankovic Story.

Below, find a complete list of Critics Choice Awards 2023 winners. For more coverage from the awards, catch up with our live blog.

Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Michelle Pfeiffer will miss Critics Choice Awards after testing positive for

COVID-19 is clearing out the Critics' Choice Awards.

Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, who is nominated for her supporting role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, was the first to announce that she would miss Sunday night's award show after testing positive for COVID-19 following her attendance at the Golden Globes on Tuesday.

That star-studded affair also drew Colin Farrell — a winner for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy — and his Banshees of Inisherin co-star and supporting actor nominee Brendan Gleeson. On Saturday The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that both Farrell, 46, and Gleeson, 67, have also come down with COVID-19 and will not attend the Critics' Choice Awards as planned.

Michelle Pfeiffer, 64, will also be a no-show, the actress told fans on Sunday. In an Instagram post, Pfeiffer shared that her own COVID-19 diagnosis meant she wouldn't be on hand to celebrate Jeff Bridges — her co-star in The Fabulous Baker Boys — getting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the show, which will be hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler.

"I’m so sorry to be missing the Critics Choice Awards today. Yep, COVID," the "disappointed" star wrote, going on to pay tribute to Bridges.

While the Golden Globes had its own share of absences — including winners Cate Blanchett, Amanda Seyfried and a flood-stranded Kevin Costner — the confluence of rising COVID-19 cases and a cluster of mostly unmasked Hollywood gatherings doesn't bode well for awards season. Someone check on Jennifer Coolidge — last seen being escorted to the Golden Globes stage by Farrell.

Miss USA R'Bonney Gabriel wins 71st Miss Universe after making history twice in 2022

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana -- Congrats to Texas' own R'Bonney Gabriel as she won Miss Universe 2023! She made history twice last year when she became the first Asian American woman to win the title of Miss Texas USA in June and then the first Filipina to win Miss USA in October.

The video above is from a previous report.

Gabriel spoke to our sister station, ABC13, before she left for New Orleans two weeks ago and shared how her national win was a dream come true. Up to that point, it had been 14 years since Texas took home the Miss USA crown.

"It all happened so fast. When they called my name, I didn't realize I won. It was probably about five seconds and I'm not reacting. Then I felt that sash come over me. It was just such a rush of feelings and I tell people you kind of black out because there's so much going on. It was just pure, utter shock really," she said.

Her mom is from Beaumont and her father is an immigrant from the Philippines. To Gabriel, preserving and celebrating her culture has always been a priority. Although she never saw a state titleholder that looked like her, she never let that hinder her confidence.

I took that win home for my family, for my community, for Houston, for Texas, and for the Asian American community," Gabriel said.

The Houston native dazzled judges and fans with her unique and stylish wardrobe, taking home the Best State Costume award in an outfit inspired by the Texas bluebonnet. Her national costume, titled "Woman on the Moon", is a tribute to the NASA Space Center in Houston, which is working to send the first woman to the moon.

She is known for her passion of environmental sustainability in the fashion industry. Her biography on the Miss Universe website states she was a high school volleyball player who pivoted to fashion and quickly fell in love with constructing designs with fabrics and textiles at the age of 15. She earned a bachelor's degree in fashion design from he University of North Texas in 2018.

Currently, she works as the lead sewing instructor at Magpies and Peacocks in the EaDo district, teaching sewing classes to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. The nonprofit design house is dedicated to using "fashion as a force for good" through sustainability and community impact.

"I think when people think about fashion, they think about the surface level -- beautiful clothes and beautiful people. But there's so much more you can do within the industry. The industry is the second largest polluting industry in the world," she said.

Gabriel added, "When you think about how a shirt is made, there's a lot of extra fabric that's just thrown into the landfill. So my mission is to use that excess fabric or recycle and upcycle different fabrics, and make new beautiful pieces from it to combat the issue of pollution in my industry."

Typically, Miss USA resides in Los Angeles during her year of service, but Gabriel said she's spent most of the last three months in Houston to prepare for the Miss Universe competition. Gabriel competed alongside 83 other contestants in New Orleans on Saturday.

She is the first Miss USA to take home the international title in more than a decade and move to Thailand for her year of service. She also plans on continuing her own clothing brand, "R'Bonney Nola", and serving as an ambassador for her platform.

I want to be remembered as a very hard working, unique woman that really embraced my passion for fashion. I want to be remembered for embracing who I was and really just putting my best foot forward, embracing my culture and owning who I am. I hope that inspires everybody else, too," said Gabriel.
