Jack Nicholson's Estranged Daughter Tessa Gourin Claims He 'Wasn't Interested' in a Relationship

"From a very young age, my mother told me not to tell anyone that I have this famous dad," Tessa Gourin said of father Jack Nicholson in a new interview

Tessa Gourin continues to speak out about her childhood and what she says it was like growing up as the estranged daughter of Jack Nicholson. The New York-based actress, 28, spoke with The Daily Beast in a recent interview about her experiences, explaining that since she was young, her mother, Jennine Gourin, told her "not to tell anyone that I have this famous dad."

I knew he was powerful and Daddy Warbucks-level rich, so I kind of equated my life to being like Orphan Annie's," she said.

Gourin told the publication — which described her as the "spitting image" of Nicholson — that the actor "wasn't interested" in having a relationship with her when she was a child. Gourin declined to go into detail on specifics, although she did state that he funded her early education.

"When you're a child, you don't have a choice where you're going, so if your mom is pushing you on someone who's technically your father and he agrees to see you for anywhere between one hour and a couple of days, that's where you're going to go," Gourin said. "I don't know this person very well, we'll just say that."

Nicholson, who has five other children, hasn't publicly acknowledged Gourin as his daughter. A rep for the actor didn't immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Gourin also told The Daily Beast that she wanted to act her entire life, asking to be filmed as a kid and performing at sleepovers. "My mom wouldn't let me act when I was younger, and I can respect that, but I'm like, 'F---, I would have killed it,' " she said.

Last month, Gourin wrote a piece for Newsweek where she explained that she "sat on the sidelines and watched in frustration as other celebrity children have seamlessly secured roles or been signed to huge agencies." She added some additional thoughts on the "nepo baby" discussion and other actresses denying that they benefitted from nepotism in her The Daily Beast interview.

"It's such a double-sided thing, because I can also understand the frustration of getting in the door, and then once you're there it's like, 'Okay, now show us what you can do,' " Gourin said. "But as an actor, that's the most exciting thing to me. It's a driving force to want to prove yourself. This guilty thing over ultimately having a gift is something you should just work out yourself, and put into your work."

While she had a lifelong admiration for acting, Gourin revealed that she grew fearful of being blacklisted because of her connection to Nicholson, and stopped in her mid-20s. "I was afraid people would think I was tacky or that I was riding off his coattails," she said. "But this person doesn't want me in his life, so how would you use that to your benefit?"

As an actor, Gourin said she has respect for Nicholson. "I really want this to come across: If I were to discredit anything about his acting, then that wouldn't make me an artist, because making art and being the world's greatest dad are not the same thing," she said.

Nicholson's five other children are Jennifer Nicholson, 59, from his marriage to Sandra Knight; Caleb Goddard, 52, with Five Easy Pieces costar Susan Anspach; Honey Hollman, 41, with model Winnie Hollman; and daughter Lorraine, 32, and son Ray, 30, with actress Rebecca Broussard.

The actor previously told AARP Magazine in 2010 that he wanted to be "inspirational, or some kind of good influence on them without overburdening them" as a father.

"I always read to them, from childhood on; I think that's a father's responsibility," he said at the time of the two younger children. "I took them to things I knew they might not love — opera, ballet. They like going to the ball games with me. And they are very comfortable around show business; they are good set rats."

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood Is Open! See the Food at Toadstool Cafe

From Mario burgers to Princess Peach cakes, the restaurant at the Hollywood theme park is filled with whimsical menu items perfect for game lovers.

Super Nintendo World opens to the public on Friday and in true Universal Studios fashion, the restaurant in the newest addition to the Hollywood theme park is a fully immersive experience.

Toadstool Cafe is located behind a mushroom-shaped façade. There, diners are greeted by campy and cartoonish dining chairs that are made to look like oversized, knobby wood furniture. Dotted along the restaurant's walls and ceilings are green warp tubes and yellow mystery boxes, mainstays of the Mario games. The "windows" to the outside world display serene images of the Mushroom Kingdom's landscape.
To help fans plan their trip to the United States' first branch of Nintendo-related theme parks, Universal Studios Hollywood's official Instagram gave a peak at what "chef Toad has cooked up." Read on for some of the menu items made for the game's fanatics:

Piranha Plant Caprese: The piranha plant caprese is as much a sculpture as it is a meal. Two segments of a quartered tomato are dotted with circles of mozzarella cheese to form the piranha plant's head, while a single stalk of asparagus strewn along the plate makes for the stem. This eye-catching arrangement is accompanied by simply sliced tomatoes and mozzarella covered in a basil pesto as well as a bed of mesclun greens and marinated mushrooms.

Super Mushroom Soup: Many of the savory dishes on the menu like to feature mushrooms to invoke the air of the video game kingdom, so the super mushroom soup is certainly no exception. The creamy mushroom soup is served in a mushroom-shaped bowl and topped with three parmesan crackers with an image of Mario's mushroom power-up printed on them.

Toadstool Cheesy Garlic Knots: All of the dough for these garlic knots is made fresh in-house every day, according to the Los Angeles Times. The treats are formed into the shape of a mushroom before baking, after which, they're brushed with garlic butter and showered in parsley and parmesan cheese. An order of four comes with a bright red marinara for dipping.

Super Star Chicken Salad: This simple grilled chicken salad comes with a ranch-inspired truffle dressing to get a little hint of the Mushroom Kingdom in every bite. The classic salad made up of grilled chicken, romaine, cabbage, tomatoes and mushrooms also features miniature star-shaped croutons and a Super Star Parmesan cracker to top it all off.

Yoshi's Favorite Fruit and Veggie Salad: This plate mixes sweet and savory for a salad inspired by the beloved green dinosaur. The salad is tossed in a raspberry vinaigrette and features crunchy radishes and cucumbers, mushrooms and tomatoes to accompany plenty of strawberries and blueberries. The salad also has some green polka-dotted croutons meant to resemble Yoshi eggs and slices of star fruit to finish it off.

Chef Toad's Short Rib Special: This decadent main course features a short rib that's been braised for four hours, says LA Times. Mushrooms make a return appearance on the plate along with a bed of goat cheese polenta. The whole dish is surrounded by a moat of red wine reduction with spots of crème fraîche to resemble the mushroom-like pattern on Toad's head. The dish is topped with a parmesan cracker featuring a stamp of Toad's face.

The Mario Burger: The Mario burger is chef Toad's take on the classic bacon cheeseburger. The beef patty is accompanied by American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and, of course, mushrooms. The bun is stamped with Mario's mustache and then skewered with a pick topped with a replica of the plumber's iconic red cap.

Fire Flower Spaghetti and Meatballs: Having spaghetti and meatballs on the menu is a no-brainer considering the game's Italian plumber and his brother. Toad's take has some added mushrooms to transport guests to the Mushroom Kingdom. The plate's topped off with a Parmesan crisp snuggled between the meatballs featuring a Fire Flower printed on the surface, letting customers know there's some chili flakes in there, too.

Luigi Burger: A grilled chicken breast is topped with a slice of Swiss, a thick ring of green bell pepper and rests on a bed of greens. The whole thing is topped with an herby basil pesto and sandwiched between a brioche bun with Luigi's 'stache emblazoned on it. Like the Mario burger, Luigi's sandwich is held together with a pick featuring the brother's famed green cap.

Super Star Lemon Squash: This special drink is chock full of bursting boba with bright fruity flavors like green apple, orange, lemon and strawberry. The lemony soda then gets topped with star-shaped mango jellies.

Mt. Beanpole Cake: This two-piece cake features a taller stack and a shorter stack to recreate the landscape of the platformer video game. Layers of Italian cookie cake are separated by distinct Neapolitan-like layers of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla cream. The top layers of both stacks are coated in a matcha cream, and then the taller stack is skewered with a miniature recreation of the flagpole players find at the end of every level.

Princess Peach Cake: The Princess Peach cake pays tribute to the royal of the Mushroom Kingdom herself. The funfetti cupcake is filled with a fruity jam and features a tower of pink frosting. The mountainous dessert is covered in glitter and topped with a sugar cookie that's been cut and printed to look like the princess's tiara.

Block Tiramisu: All the desserts at the Toadstool Cafe could double as art pieces, and the question mark block tiramisu is one of the more sculptural desserts. The decadent structure is composed of five sugar cookies with a "?" printed on each one. Inside the box, customers will find layers of lady fingers and plenty of whipped cream. The dessert is accompanied by a swipe of raspberry sauce. On top of the tiramisu is one of Mario's power-ups printed on a piece of white chocolate.

Gerard Butler Recalls How He 'Almost Killed' Hilary Swank While Filming 'P.S. I Love You'

"She had to get taken to the hospital," Gerard Butler detailed of an on-set accident that occurred while he and Hilary Swank filmed the 2007 romance.

Gerard Butler is recalling the moment when he "almost killed" Hilary Swank on the set of P.S. I Love You.

While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show Tuesday, the actor, 53, revealed to host Drew Barrymore that he injured Swank, 48, while the pair were working on a scene in the 2007 film where he danced "like an idiot" in boxer shorts and a pair of suspenders.

Detailing that his character, Gerry Kennedy, was supposed to get hit in the face with the suspender clip while getting undressed during one part of the film, Butler said the piece took off and hit Swank's head instead.

"It gets stuck, it releases [and] flies over my head, hits her in the head — slashes her head," he explained. "I cut her open. You could even see the teeth [of the clip]. She had to get taken to the hospital."Added Butler: "Imagine this studio, and in three seconds, everybody's gone. And I'm just sitting there in my Irish [shamrock] boxer shorts and my boots and a pair of socks, and I just started crying. I scarred Hilary Swank. I almost took her eye out, and I just made a fool of myself for two days."

P.S. I Love You, which was directed by Richard LaGravenese and based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern, follows a widow who learns of 10 messages that her late husband left her after his death to help her move on.

Alongside Butler and Swank — who is currently pregnant and expecting twins with husband Philip Schneider — the film also stars Lisa Kudrow, Gina Gershon, James Marsters, Harry Connick Jr. and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Butler also explained during his chat with Barrymore, 47, that he went into filming P.S. I Love You with the intention of putting Swank's needs first.

"I remember saying to the director, I'm not going to think about myself in this movie, I'm only going to think about her," he said. "Make sure she's okay, she's cool, because that's kinda who this [character] was, and it made the experience so much more fun."

"When I got out of ... [the] actor, self-obsessed, how am I doing [state of mind], I actually was more like, 'How is she doing?' " Butler continued, then calling Swank "so cool and so great to work with."

Britney Spears Makes Rare Comment About Ex Justin Timberlake

Britney Spears recently reflected on a memory with ex Justin Timberlake in a since-deleted social media post. See what the pop star had to say about the throwback photo.

Britney Spears Makes RARE Comment About Ex Justin Timberlake

Britney Spears is stepping back in time and we're in the zone. The pop star shared a throwback photo of herself and ex Justin Timberlake, whom she dated from 1999 until 2002, clad in matching basketball uniforms to Instagram Jan. 17. In the since-deleted post, Britney wrote, "When we used to shoot hoops TOGETHER … that's when miracles happened!!!"The Grammy winner, who tied the knot with Sam Asghari in June 2022, added, "I came out of my mom's stomach just like we all did!!! Psss … why always cast me out ??? I'm equal as all!!!"

The "Sometimes" singer's reference to their relationship comes nearly two years after Justin issued to a public apology to his ex following the debut of Framing Britney Spears.

The documentary, which premiered in February 2021, prompted criticism from fans about comments Justin made about his ex after their split, including his seemingly close depiction of Britney in his 2002 video for "Cry Me a River."

In his statement, Justin also simultaneously apologized to Janet Jackson for their 2004 Halftime Show incident, sharing that he "cared for" and "respected" both women.

"I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed," he wrote in a February 2021 statement. "I also feel compelled to respond, in part, because everyone involved deserves better and most importantly, because this is a larger conversation that I whole heartedly want to be part of and grow from."The 'N Sync alum, who married Jessica Biel in 2012, went on to note that he did "not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again."

He continued, "I know this apology is a first step and doesn't absolve the past. I want to take accountability for my own missteps in all of this as well as be part of a world that uplifts and supports

Prince Harry criticized for "shifting to extremes" and "losing public" support, without information about specific actions or statements.

Prince Harry is a public figure and his actions and statements are subject to scrutiny and interpretation by the media and the public. It is not possible for me to determine whether he is "shifting to extremes" or "losing the public" without more information about the specific actions or statements in question. Additionally, public perception can change over time, so any statement about his current popularity would be subject to change.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have recently stepped back from their roles as senior members of the British Royal Family and moved to North America. Since then, they have been making a number of public appearances, speeches and interviews. They have also been involved in various charitable and philanthropic initiatives. Some of the things they have said and done have been praised, while others have been criticized. Some people have praised their decision to step back from the royal family, saying that it allows them to live more authentic lives, while others have criticized them for being hypocritical or for not showing enough respect for the institution of the monarchy. Some people have also criticized Prince Harry for his recent comments on social media and in interviews, as they perceive them as divisive or extreme. However, it's worth noting that opinions on the matter are quite polarized and there are a lot of people who still support Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Italy's most-wanted Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro arrested in Sicily

Italy's most-wanted Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro has been arrested in Sicily after 30 years on the run.

Messina Denaro was reportedly detained in a private clinic in Sicily's capital, Palermo, where he was receiving treatment for cancer.

He is alleged to be a boss of the notorious Cosa Nostra Mafia and he was tried and sentenced to life in jail in absentia in 2002 over numerous murders.

More than 100 members of the armed forces were involved in his arrest.

Italian media reported that Messina Denaro was captured just before 10:00 (09:00 GMT) and taken to a secret location by the Carabinieri. He was reportedly visiting the clinic under a fake name for a course of chemotherapy.

A video circulated by Italian media appears to show people standing in the street and applauding the Italian police as Messina Denaro is led away.

These are some of the murders he was convicted over:

  • the 1992 killing of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino,
  • the deadly 1993 bomb attacks in Milan, Florence and Rome
  • the kidnapping, torture and killing of the 11-year-old son of a mafioso-turned-state witness

Messina Denaro once boasted he could "fill a cemetery" with his victims.

The Mafia boss also oversaw racketeering, illegal waste dumping, money-laundering and drug-trafficking for the powerful Cosa Nostra organised crime syndicate.

He was reportedly the protege of Totò Riina, head of the Corleone clan, who was arrested in 1993 after 23 years on the run.

Clans nicknamed Messina Denaro "Diabolik" - the name of an uncatchable thief in a comic book series - and "U Siccu" (Skinny).

He is thought to be Cosa Nostra's last "secret-keeper". Many informers and prosecutors believe that he holds all the information and the names of those involved in several of the most high-profile crimes by the Mafia, including the bomb attacks that killed magistrates Falcone and Borsellino.

Although Messina Denaro had been a fugitive since 1993, he was thought to have still been issuing orders to his subordinates from various secret locations.

Over the decades, Italian investigators often came close to catching Messina Denaro by monitoring those closest to him.

This resulted in the arrest of his sister Patrizia and several other of his associates in 2013. Police also seized valuable businesses linked to Messina Denaro, leaving him increasingly isolated.

However, few photos of Messina Denaro existed and police had to rely on digital composites to reconstruct his appearance in the decades after he went on the run. A recording of his voice was not released until 2021.

In September 2021, a Formula 1 fan from Liverpool was arrested at gunpoint in a restaurant in the Netherlands after being mistaken for Messina Denaro.

Italians were glued to their screens on Monday morning when news of the arrest of the mafia boss broke.

For years, Messina Denaro had been a symbol of the state's inability to reach the upper echelons of the organised crime syndicates.

His arrest will be an unexpected sign of hope that the Mafia can be eradicated even in the southern regions of the country, where the state is perceived as largely absent and ineffective.

University of Essex criminology professor Anna Sergi told the BBC that Messina Denaro's arrest was "symbolic not just because he was the boss of Cosa Nostra, but because he represents the last fugitive the Italian state really wanted to get its hands on."

She said the reason people applauded in Palermo and the state felt "triumphant" was because the news felt like closure.

However, questions are likely to arise over the timing of the arrest.

Prof Sergi suggested it was still unclear how the morning raid on the clinic came about, who tipped the authorities off and crucially, how it was possible for Messina Denaro to "run around Sicily, presumably protected, for 30 years".

Messina Denaro was being treated for cancer so was "quite sick", the professor said, adding people were speculating that someone in the crime world had decided he was no longer useful.

"This means he was likely still part of structure where there is an exchange of favours between the Mafia and state, and where one can be given up in return for something," she explained.

But at a press conference on Monday afternoon the Carabinieri appeared to deny that they had received a tip-off on the whereabouts of Messina Denaro and emphasised the hard work of investigators who tracked the mafia boss down in a "painstaking and extremely delicate" operation.

The authorities said Messina Denaro did not attempt to run when he realised the operation was taking place, and that he admitted to being the man the Carabinieri were searching for as soon as they approached him.

They also said that the fugitive was "looking well, well dressed and wearing high-end clothing": "We certainly did not find a destroyed man… we found a well-groomed man in a good economic condition."

General Pasquale Angelosanto of the ROS special force unit of the Carabinieri added that Messina Denaro was wearing a Rolex watch worth 35,000 euros ($37,880, £31,067) when officers detained him.

"Obviously the mafia has not been defeated, and it would be a mistake to think it so," said the Palermo prosecutor general Maurizio De Lucia.

De Lucia also told reporters that Messina Denaro spent the last three decades hiding out in many parts of Italy, most recently in Sicily.

After the arrest, tributes to the work of the armed forces poured in from across the political spectrum.

Gian Carlo Caselli, a judge and former prosecutor general, said that the arrest of Messina Denaro was an "exceptional... simply historical event" that might lead to significant developments in the ongoing inquiries into the 1993 bomb attacks that killed 10 people across Italy.

Italy's president, Sergio Mattarella, whose brother Piersanti was killed by Cosa Nostra in 1980, congratulated the minister of the interior and the carabinieri military police.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni travelled to Sicily today and visited the memorial to Giuseppe Falcone and the other victims of the 1992 bombing near Palermo, where she observed a minute's silence.

Ms Meloni also thanked the armed forces for their work in detaining the "most important member of the mafia criminal group", adding: "This is a great victory for the state."
