Pixar chief Pete Docter discusses Disney+ releases and mixed reception at Cannes.

Pete Docter, the head of Pixar, recently offered his thoughts on the Disney+ lineup and the mixed reviews the company's movies garnered at Cannes. Docter addressed the change to direct streaming at a panel discussion at the festival, admitting that Pixar unintentionally "trained" families to expect their movies on Disney+. Because of the ongoing epidemic that is impacting theatrical releases, streaming platforms have grown in popularity as a means of reaching audiences for studios.

Docter clarified that the choice to make movies available on Disney+ came from a desire to give families access to their material during times when theaters were closed or only partially occupied. The popularity of streaming platform movies like "Soul" and "Luca" suggests that consumers have adopted this new consuming style. Docter expressed hope for a future return to cinemas while also acknowledging the value of the theatrical experience.

In the conversation, Docter also touched on how "Luca," the newest movie from Pixar, was received in Cannes. The Italian Riviera serves as the backdrop for the narrative of a juvenile sea monster that has a life-changing summer. While "Luca" earned largely favorable reviews from critics, it did not receive the same amount of excitement at the prestigious film festival as some of Pixar's earlier films.

Docter said that the response was "confusing" for him and the team because they were unsure of how the movie would fair at a festival. He mentioned that the movie was purposefully It may not have been in line with the expectations and spectacle frequently associated with Cannes because it was intended to have a more intimate and personal feel.

Despite this, Docter remained upbeat about the movie's influence, emphasizing the favorable reviews it garnered from viewers all across the world. Even if they don't fit the mold of conventional festival expectations, he underlined the value of creating interesting, accessible stories that appeal to viewers.

Docter's comments illuminate the studio's dedication to adapt to new circumstances while remaining true to their narrative approach as Pixar continues to negotiate the changing landscape of film distribution. Pixar can continue to enchant spectators with their inventive and emotionally complex animated pictures thanks to the combination of Disney+ releases and conventional theatrical premieres.
