Type 2 Diabetes: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Type 2 Diabetes: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose). It is the most common form of diabetes, affecting millions of people worldwide. People with type 2 diabetes have high blood sugar levels due to either the body not producing enough insulin or the cells not responding to the insulin that is produced.

Causes:

Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of lifestyle factors and genetic predisposition. These include being overweight or obese, having a sedentary lifestyle, eating an unhealthy diet, and having a family history of diabetes.

Symptoms:

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing of cuts and bruises. Other symptoms may include weight loss, increased hunger, and tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.

Treatment:

Treatment for type 2 diabetes typically involves lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. Medications such as insulin, metformin, and sulfonylureas may also be prescribed to help control blood sugar levels. In some cases, surgery may be recommended to help control blood sugar levels.
