Conserving the Medicine Lots: Preserving a Sacred Site for Future Generations

Conservation work is underway at Medicine Lots, a conservation area located in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including rare species of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The work is being done by the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank, which is responsible for preserving and protecting the island’s natural resources

.

The project includes the removal of invasive species, such as Japanese barberry and multiflora rose, which are crowding out native plants. The land bank is also planting native species, such as wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs, to help restore the area’s natural habitat. In addition, the land bank is installing fencing to protect the area from deer and other animals.

The land bank is also working to improve access to the area by creating trails and boardwalks. This will allow visitors to explore the area and observe the wildlife without disturbing the habitat. The land bank is also working to educate the public about the importance of conservation and the need to protect the island’s natural resources.

The conservation work at Medicine Lots is part of a larger effort to protect and preserve the island’s natural resources. The land bank is committed to protecting the island’s unique environment and ensuring that future generations can enjoy its beauty.
